So, in our two testing environments everything is hosted on virtual servers with VMware.  Meaning it's one physical computer then a bunch of servers running on the same machine. (for the two non IT assholes that play games here)

We use Vmware 1.x which does not have the ability to set the order in which the machines start, the newer versions do. 

Since I can't set the priority of the machines they all start as soon as the server is rebooted.  The domain controller takes longer to come up then the database servers.  When the database servers come up the sql server agent fails to start because the account can't authenticate to the domain controller since it is still booting. 

Now, the simplest way to fix this would be to create a batch file running on the physical machine that does a net start command to restart the service after say 5 minutes.

I mention to the QA coordinator that I need to schedule a time with him to reboot the dc and one server in the test network (which they aren't using until January) to test the script and make sure it works before the next round of patching. 

His objection is that he doesn’t want code/jobs running in the other networks that aren’t in production.  I calmly explain to him that this isn’t code, or a job and that there are no VMhosts in production so there is no way for it to ever be there.   

He then says that he wants it to go through change management first, to which I explain that we don’t use change management for non production changes and change management is only to be used for deploying code or changes that effect the web and database applications in production.   

After some more arguing I finally just say, you know what? These servers are some one else’s problem in three months anyways so I don’t want to expend the energy explaining this to you.  When I patch next month and the service doesn’t start contact a database admin and have them restart the server agent.  Forget it, I don’t care.

There is in the newer versions.  These machines are still using 1.x.   They won't be our client in three months, while our business is scrambling to make up the revenue stream from them most of us are secretly stock piling champaign for the toast we are going to have when they go away. 

The reason they are going away is because they got bought out by a larger company, so they are all losing their jobs shortly after anyways.  I feel bad for the guys up there that are a pleasure to work with but most of them are just ass clowns.
