Barrow, Alaska. Not only is it the farthest north city in the U.S. but since they don't get their wallet or passport it'll add an extra element of surprise on the trip home...

Wow, let's see.
Athens, Georgia
Tuscaloosa
Ardmore, AL/TN
Oneonta, AL
Actually, any town in Alabama that starts with a vowel, and if you are trying to make the trip back to Ohio extra Alabama special, pick someplace on the far end of the state like Florala.
For that matter, somewhere in Florida would make the bus ride quite grueling and go through a lot of humid south.
College Station, Texas, though El Paso would be good for the whole far side of Texas feel.
I think I might have to pick somewhere in the south, and as far from the interstate as possible. How close to Panama City, FL can you get but not get to see the beach?

Static, Tennessee. Yes it really exists, and I opted for the walking route:

Undisclosed location. So is Buenos Aires fair game? That would be a bus ride. Or 20.
Otherwise, which criteria are most important? The hassle of getting from the airport to the bus terminal and the awfulness of the time spent getting on the bus? The length of the bus ride? I guess there is no meal money, so a really long trip would be pretty hungry or involve some kind of bus trip exchange of goods and services.
Looking at a map trying to pick places that would perhaps include less interstate travel and more US highway travel, I came up with Eureka, CA; Medford, OR; Del Rio, TX; and Panama City, FL. Oakland, CA seems like it might be an awful place to catch a bus. Key West seems really damn far away.
EDIT: Trying to fly to one of the more remote places I listed involves changing planes. Wouldn't you just get off the frst plane and take the bus back from the more civilized location?

While Arkansas does really suck.....a lot, there are a ton of interstates that are easily accessible. My vote would be to somewhere that's way the fuck out there.
Del Rio Texas is a good call. El Paso, while there is an interstate there, would suck horribly. Miles and miles of boring desert, lots of nasty people on the bus, and a fair to midland chance the bus will actually break down. Also, there is an 80% chance someone on the bus would have a chicken.
El Paso is my vote.
