 Canada has the same number of guns, if not  more, per capita as the US.  Their murder rate is no where near ours.  The break down of American society has way more to do with economics, the war on drugs, and the media giving instant martyrdom/fame to any crack pot that blows themselves up.

I own guns. I've never shot anyone in the civilian arena. It's my right to own a gun if I so choose. Last time I checked plenty of Aussies had guns. What else would you shoot Roo's with?

This is one of those things that will be debated for years, likely centuries.  The thing is that guns are no different from alcohol, drugs or even cars in that they can all be used for practicality or for recreation, but if you don't use them responsibly people can end up dead.

Americans have prided themselves on their freedom and the need to maintain that.  That doesn't mean that I need to keep a gun to repel an oppressive government but some people just want to feel that they are in control of their destinies and owning a firearm helps that need.  Some people just enjoy target shooting (I would fall in here - I admit it, I own a rifle) for the hell of it.  We're a brutish country that likes to see shit go boom from time to time. 

Besides, take away our guns and we're one step closer to being France; I am definitely NOT on-board with that nonsense.

Well said. Dont forget about people that like to hunt either. Who knows, a lot could happen in 5-10 years, could be that those owning a gun are going to be glad they have them.
