Upcoming MMORPG

A lot of you probably already know about this or have at least heard about it, so I apologize if this is redundant.
For any stargate fans there is a new MMORPG coming out called Stargate Worlds. The graphics look pretty sweet from the screenshots I have seen and from what I have read the world will be very interactive with various places to explore. The world evolves with gameplay and it has a lot of FPS elements. Also you can apparently customize weapons and such. I have not heard if "evolution" means players will be able to establish permanent residences and cities in the worlds but that would be nice if they did, getting back to some of the MMORPG elements of the past like in UO and Starwars Galaxies, etc. The release date is set for Fall 2008. The trailer kind of sucks but the concept art and actual screens are pretty sweet. There is no word yet on how many playable classes/races there will be, vehicles, and initial worlds for exploration but who knows.
Anyhow check out the website and explore for yourselves if you like.

I wonder what kind of budget they have.
I think they are being backed by a major studio. If that is the case they have a lot more resources than Blizzard had prior to WoW. I guess it depends on how deep the pockets are and how willing they are to do ground breaking stuff. It could flop or it could boom.

From what I read via the link Artic posted, it uses the Unreal Engine for graphics and textures (I could be wrong or missing the purpose), there are FPS elements in the game but it is still a lock and shoot type MMO. I think what makes it unique is that it is not based off of HP and Items so much as it is based off of skill, tactics, and use of cover. According to the developers a low level player could pwn a high level player if said player did not use cover and watch flanking. This is highly different than WoW or other MMOs where a high level, elite geared, buffoon can own everything in sight while absorbing ridiculous amounts of damage.
Sure players will be able to upgrade and modify their weapons, but they still must navigate terrain and use skill sets, to gain a tactical advantage. So, in that respect it is more like a FPS without the need to constantly train on an individual that is moving (once you lock you are locked).
Another cool aspect of the game is the way they are doing skills. This is revolutionary in my opinion and takes player customization to a whole new level! Let's use Mages as an example. In WoW you have 3 trees which you can talent spec at various levels. However the trees are tiered. Because of this there are a lot of cookie cutter builds and little uniqueness. In Stargate Worlds, using the same example, you would earn points and be able to select talents from any tree at any tier provided you had the points. That is a rough example but you can see the point. IF they provide a wealth of skills in a character class and or allow classes to pull from a general pool of skills, the skill customization options will be unreal! Just as people are different, there would be a virtual world where that uniqueness is closely mimicked.
This is a long post and I am sorry, but one last thing.
I really do think these developers have ass tons of money. They made a mention in the interview that cost was of no concern. I know it is a sharp contrast from WoW in the concept of play (fantasy vs Sci-fi) but if they deliver on their promises it could rival WoW in popularity (though I doubt it could overtake Blizzard's cash cow after so many players have devoted so much time over the years).

But there will still be cookie cutter builds as there will be people all dressed in the same gear with the same skills that make the most out of there class just like wow.
as for whether this will work or not depends if the game requires skill like they say then they just lost half there market.

Sounds like PlanetSide. When WoW dies, Blizzard needs to make World of Starcraft. MMOFPS FTW!
