They are, but that mega farming bullshit where you put 70,000 chickens in one place pretty much renders the farm land in the area useless for the next generation.

Not entirely true, they are kept in houses that can be cleaned and processed. Also, chicken crap is one of the best fertalizers you can find for pasture lands. We used it on our hay fields every year when we cleaned the houses out.

We only had 20k per house though.

In fairness unusable is an exaggeration.  70k may be a low number, I am not sure how many birds they can actually stack in a normal farm, all my relatives that farm still are dairy.

But CAFO farms still pose huge water contamination issues when spills occur.   Not to mention the stench. The farm bureau back home did everything they could do to keep them out for that reason.

This place was owned by the family of one of my classmates.  I asked a lot of questions.  Here are some interesting tidbits.

10000 cages.  7 chickens per cage.

2 HUGE fans keep the air circulating.  If the fans go out then everything in the building suffacates.
This happend to them once and it took the entire community 2 weeks to dig a fire pit and toss all of them in so they could burn them.

The eggs drop down on to a conveyor belt.  Apperently laying an egg isn't so great for a chicken because these things were covered in blood and shit.   MMMM

When the chichen gets old enough it gets sent to a soup company.  He wouldn't tell us which one.

They had a special dozer for plowing through the shit.  Which they used/sold as fertilizer.

Again, worst smell EVER

Laying houses are the worst smelling things around to be sure. We didn't have laying houses, we raised broilers for Hudson foods who was then bought out by Tyson. We also didn't have to keep them caged, because we weren't collecting eggs. Imagine a narrow house about 200 yards long with 20,000 chickens roaming around on the floor and it's what our houses were like.

We did have the large intake and exhaust fans on either end of the house, but also had curtains that could be raised and lowered to provide plenty of air.

A laying house is a whole other bag of tricks.
