Welcome to the Losers' Bracket: Oregon, East Carolina, Notre Dame, and Auburn!
Night asked me what my rankings are. Well, that's still a week off, but here are the 27 contestants:
Alabama
Ball State
Boise State
BYU
Colorado
UConn
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
LSU
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
Northwestern
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Penn State
South Florida
USC
Texas
TCU
Texas Tech
Tulsa
Utah
Vandy
Wake Forest
Wisconsin
The picture will clear up a lot after this week. For starters, Alabama plays Georgia and OU plays TCU. Several other undefeated schools will pick up common opponents. That is, they will have some common opponents to compare provided they remain undefeated.
Most likely to be knocked out:
Alabama or Georgia (game of the year so far, apologies to Auburn and LSU) hard to call, but we know one of them has to lose. Unless there's a sudden hurricane.
TCU
UConn
Minnesota (happy, C-bus?)
Nebraska
Northwestern

Although, if I had to name a top 10 undefeated teams right now (just for Night):
1 LSU defending champs until Florida knocks them off. or Georgia. or Alabama
2 Florida played some decent teams, didn't let them score
3 Alabama trouble with Tulane, crushed the other 3 teams they played. if they beat Georgia they may get on a roll
4 Georgia still have to play LSU Fla Bama Auburn Tenn Kentucky Vandy Georgia Tech...ouch
5 USC will finish the year in the top 2 MOST LIKELY, meanwhile LSU has played more games despite a hurricane
6 Penn State destroying underwhelming competition by halftime
7 Oklahoma same as Penn State
8 Missouri insane amounts of offense
9 BYU same as Penn State
10 Wisconsin because I have to put another team in the top 10
My prediction right now is that USC beats Oklahoma for the title while a one loss Alabama or Florida and maybe even an undefeated Penn State or Wisconsin miss out on the title game. (A four team playoff would result in the SEC champ knocking off USC, but who wants to watch USC crush Wisconsin and an SEC team beat Bob Stoops when we could watch Alabama destroy BYU and Ohio State lose to LSU or Florida. Again.) Actually, Penn State and Wisconsin are probably not that good. Still waiting for Ohio State to actually show up for a game. If that happens by that Wisconsin game, maybe OSU still wins the Big Ten. Show me something. Meanwhile the Big 12 has played NO ONE. Does Illinois count? Well, this week they get Va Tech and Fla St.
Really, of the teams I listed, USC and Alabama impress me the most so far.

Well first off, isn't it a bit silly to downrank a team based on the fact that they WILL play tough teams? I thought rankings were supposed to be based on who they DID play. Anyway, your list of Georgia's remaining games is exactly why USC doesn't really deserve a high ranking, they play a chump (but in-conference) schedule. Georgia plays five or more ranked teams every year and STILL gets at least as good of a record as USC. So why is USC ranked so strongly? Rose Bowl. That's it.

Hmm, my comment about Georgia is a little unfortunate in that it reflects nothing about why I ranked them there. It was simply an observation. Late in the season, I will almost certainly have Georgia ranked very favorably due to their schedule.
After running my analysis, I determined Florida's crushings of Miami and Tennessee put them ahead of Alabama's crushings of Clemson and Arkansas. I had both these teams ahead of Georgia based on the overall quality of their wins. (Compare the numbers in Georgia's wins over SC and ASU.) As for LSU being number 1, I admit to falling back to an argument not based on any analysis of this year's teams. They are the defending champs (of the SEC and the "best two teams in the BCS"). They have also beaten Auburn in Auburn. It's sort of hard to tell which SEC team should be ranked where until they play. The important thing is that the SEC looks good and deep this year. Penn State and USC were looking good as far as the results of the games played so far. Of course, USC blew that against OSU. The Big 12 teams have done well so far also, especially Oklahoma. It's a little hard to compare the schedules, though. (By the way, I threw out games against FCS teams.) Let's see how Penn State does against Illinois. Then we can at least compare them to Missouri.
Oh, ad we can compare Georgia and Alabama tomorrow as well.
