I've only taken a cursory glance but this is what I gathered:

Apple is gay with it's rental policy...limited to apple gay formats for local playback

Roku isn't worth it until the 1080p version comes out and until USB playback is improved

Boxee twice as much but looks like it will play anything from USB

anyone researched this important bullshit and have an opinion?

My opinion, wait and see what googletv comes out with this month and next. I have a feeling its going to be awesomesauce.

Buy a tuner card and video card with hdmi out... hook up a pc to your tv.  Attach basic cable to the tuner, use your favorite DVR software to record shows over clear QAM or via antenna.  Or download/rent/stream them.

I help my friend set up his Roku yesterday.  It seemed like a simple solution,  I would endourse this product if I still owned a TV or netflix account. 

I've been using Boxee on my media center for the past 6 months or so, its pretty slick. As they've been getting closer to releasing the Boxee box, they've been adding new features. I haven't tried any others, but Boxee seems worth it. My roommate is buying it when it comes out, so I'll have more to say then

my bluray does netflix already but I was hoping more of the networks would put content on these things. Hulu plus sucks ass.

So not that you fools watch much on it, but it just came out that Google TV is leaving out the major stations NBC, ABC, and CBS. At least those three won't be in the line up. It's not a huge loss for sure, but still something to consider.
