I know there are some courier missions that will have you go to other systems, though at most those have been 5 jumps for me which is just a few minutes to get to. Autopilot will fuck you up because it doesnt warp you next to the jump gates, only within 20 kilometers of the gate, which then your ship will have to sub warp to the gate, which can take a little while especially if you are using modules which cut into your speed. When you just manually warp to the gates, you can just instantly jump through because it lands you right on top of them. Well I just subbed up, so I have two 21 day trials to hand out. If you should be interested I could throw some cash at you, and walk you through some things to make it easier. But yes if you are traveling out to zero space 40 jumps is probably average for a trip. And you definitely wouldn't autopilot your way out, because it would be a death trap probably. But haven't played the game in year+.
