Title: Dell Inspiron 530 PSU Upgrade Question
Post by: Stallionite on December 17, 2008, 03:02:48 PM
I need some suggestions:

I just bought a new graphics card and found out that the minimum requirements are 400W PSU.

I currently have a 300W PSU that came with my DELL Inspiron 530.  I went cheap and wanted to upgrade as needed.  That was my first mistake

I talked to some guys @ MicroCenter and they said that Dell sucks and I can't just buy any off the shelf Power Supply due to the connectors and the Motherboard.

My questions is do you think I can just get away with using my 300W powersupply.  Anyone know of a viable upgrade if you don't think I can.  CPU is an Intel Duo E4500 that consumes about 65W, 1 HDD, and 1 DVD drive which I never really use.  Haven't dove into all the calculations for are the peripheals, but I think I'm well under 300W.

The new card at full peak takes up about 105W.

This is the card:

I had the same model and psu problem. You CAN replace it with a off the shelf one. I got a Antec 500 and works fine. The only thing left of that stupid dell is the Mobo and cpu (soon to be replaced)

Those who can't, work at microcenter for 9 bucks an hour.  Those who can get real jobs somewhere else.

edit

Seriously, I had a stapels employee call me an idiot because I refered to ram as memory and disk space as storage.

I dont know what that guy was talking about, sounds like a idion but i had a shitty inspiron  530 and i replaced the psu with a antec one.
If you still dont belive me just look at where the thing connects to the mobo and compare. Its a foxconn mobo (not a dell) and takes a standard one.
The case itself has standard mounting points too (but i suggest upgrading this as well cause the cooling on that thing blows nuts and i had to do that as well.

In the past, Dell systems used power supplies with a proprietary pin-out.  I have no idea why, since their fame was made by using off-the-shelf parts.

If Varg pulled it off with an Antec supply, good news.  Maybe they came to their senses and are using a standard pin-out now.

I would get a new PSU.  300W is pretty meager anymore and Dell's power supplies are weak to begin with.  Get a nice big wattage Antec and all your hopes and dreams will come to fruition.

PC Power and Cooling has info on their site for this... they do Dell upgrades/replacements and they have great PSU's... very efficient.

Also, I actually may have one of these in my back stock.  I bought one for my brother-in-law a while back, but never put it in since he decided after I got it that he would rather just buy a new PC.... must be nice to have money.  Anyway, I can check in the morning for you and let you know.  I'd give you a good deal on it since I'm just sitting on it.

I just went through my old invoices and the one I have is the S47D which is a 470 watt PSU.... here's the link.

http://www.pcpower.com/power-supply/silencer-470-dell.html

It's an end of life product so they don't sell it anymore, but it's still new in the box.  If you are still interested, I'd sell it to you for $40 plus shipping.

Thats a good one, you will be happy with Antec. Good stuff.

You should REALLY get a new case, the cooling on that stock one sucks.
