...I wouldn't count on warranty support anytime soon, or maybe ever.  This was in response to a warranty request I filed for an OSU-owned machine, roughly a month ago.  MPC is the parent group that bought the Gateway Computer company a little while ago.

First off why are you buying an OSU-owned PC?  Like your football team It'll only disappoint you when you need it the most!

Seriously Dell Customer service blows as well.  I've had numerous issues from the dude in India falling asleep on me, to not honoring a coupon promised after I used it only to find out that the coupon was not valid for the purchase I made, then cancelling the coupon because I already used it, but didn't.  Figure that one out!

If I didn't get such a massive discount on Dell or HP from working for GM, I'd just build my own rig.

Gateway does suck pretty hard.

Stall - We work for IT at OSU...and unfortunately that means we sometimes have to service all manner of machines.  This is not a machine that Kith is using for himself.

FWIW, Dell has the best overall support out of all of the other desktop manufacturers combined based on our own experience at OSU.  Again I'm not talking about home-support where you call India, I'm talking 2nd level support that we have direct access to (just as we do the other major vendors).  Dell has proven themselves best time and time again.  Lowest TCO.  Period.

The first PC i actually owned myself I bought from Gateway, and all I can say was that the company and the machine were pure garbage. It does really suck that you are now stuck with that situation though.

I'm not buying - I'm the lucky one who drew the short straw and gets to wrestle with Gateway for warranty claims.  I don't want anything in my house that says 'Gateway' on it.

For my money, building your own isn't worth it anymore.  Just buy a decent machine and slap in a better video card and a faster HDD.  Done.  Easy.

What I throw a little humor at the situation and all I get back is a recap of UM Football 2008?

You forgot that we lost to a MAC school for the first time ever.

You also forgot to add that we lost every offensive started (one going to OSU) with the exception of 1 OL, who was hurt and didn't play against OSU.

You also forgot our turnover ratio of 10000000 to 1.

You also forgot that our starting QB's couldn't throw a ball over 20 yards.

hasn't Michigan lost to OSU 5 years running now?  Which is unheard of?  They need to pick of the slack. 

MPC Is located here in Boise, about 3 weeks ago they told the 500 some workers thy had an hour to get there shit and leave.

I'm glad I never have to worry about layoffs

I did some research on the MPC/Gateway issues and found out some fun facts:

- MPC acquired Gateway's Professional unit for $90 million last October.

- MPC/Gateway is in a feud with one of their primary electronics providers, Flextronics, who has stopped shipping to them (several months ago) due to past-due contracts.  Similar situations now exist between MPC and most of their suppliers.  That's right, they haven't been receiving parts to cover warranty claims for several months.

- Two months ago MPC was sued by the company that handled their on-site service repairs, for defaulting on payments for the previous three months.

- In a move to recoup some money, MPC sold off their spare parts stores to one of their electronics providers - apparently this still did not resolve the dispute, so now MPC has no spare parts, in addition to a supplier who still isn't shipping to them.

- Gateway owes UPS and FedEx a combined 7 million in past-due shipping costs.  Neither agency is presently willing to ship anything for MPC and with DHL folding last month, that just leaves the US Post Office.

- People who sent in machines for warranty service, some as far back as July, have been on hold waiting for 'back-ordered' parts so that MPC could repair their machines.  Those people are now finding that they cannot get their machines back because they cannot get an employee on the phone willing to help them, let alone finding a shipper willing to pick up the broken machine and get it back to them. 

- From the start of the year to October, MPC has lost nearly $100 million.

Aside from the aforementioned problems getting them to send you a physical replacement, just try downloading drivers for any older Gateway stuff from MPC.  They have the worst fucking site ever.  I was pulling my hair out a few months ago when I worked for the libraries trying to get drivers for 2 year old Gateway laptops.  Fuck Gateway.  Fuck MPC.  Fuck computers in general.  I'm stocking up on typewriters, canned foods, bottled water, shotguns, and I'm moving to the woods behind Gron's house.
