Title: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Snackcakes on November 20, 2008, 03:20:38 PM Hey guys, gr0n and I are looking into picking up some hand guns and possibly rifles. He's set on a sig and I am not sure. I know the best way is to go out and shoot them and see what best suites me. But, just wanted to see if you all had any experience with whatever brand/make/model.

(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd222/505Erich/PaulB23nov70030001resized.jpg) I love this gun it fits comfortably in my hand. Some of the smaller guns I have shot, tend to feel uncomfortable. It has high clip capacity 15+1 standard. You might here mixed review as the first generation sigmas had feeding trouble. I have had this for almost two years put 2000+ round through it and never had any trouble. As fire as rifles you definitly want to get something Obama is going to make illegal. AR-15 is the obvious choice or you could go old school- like my modified paratrooper SKS with a collapsible stock, and flash reducing muzzle break. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Kith on November 21, 2008, 06:20:50 PM This is one of those things that will be debated for years, likely centuries. The thing is that guns are no different from alcohol, drugs or even cars in that they can all be used for practicality or for recreation, but if you don't use them responsibly people can end up dead.
Americans have prided themselves on their freedom and the need to maintain that. That doesn't mean that I need to keep a gun to repel an oppressive government but some people just want to feel that they are in control of their destinies and owning a firearm helps that need. Some people just enjoy target shooting (I would fall in here - I admit it, I own a rifle) for the hell of it. We're a brutish country that likes to see shit go boom from time to time. Besides, take away our guns and we're one step closer to being France; I am definitely NOT on-board with that nonsense. Once finances get into a little better control for me I'd be up for it. I've got a buddy that runs a range. A private range bay at Big Darby Creek Shooting Range (BDCSR) on Sunday 23NOV2008 would be $75 for 4 hours (divided by the number of shooters, up to six total, not including me). I will be the "Sponsoring Member" and the "Range Safety Officer" (Usually, there is a $25/hour fee for an RSO. I will be acting in that capacity for no charge. Hence me not paying a slice of the range fee). *BYO warm/foul weather gear--This will be outdoors. *BYO EyePro and EarPro--BDCSR does not rent or loan. At the range, you will have to buy UGLY (we call them Birth Control Glasses for a reason) glasses for $3.00 and foam ear plugs for $.50. You will not be allowed on the range without EyePro and EarPro, no exceptions. *BYO Ammo (No armor piercing, incendiary, high explosive, or tracer ammo allowed)--I have firearms, in the following calibers, that I am willing to share: Bring any brand, even Wolf. The cheaper the ammo, the more we can shoot! 9mm autopistol .38SPL revolver .223Rem/5.56x45 rifle (AR) 7.62x39 rifle (AK) 12 gauge pump shotgun up to 3" .22LR autopistol and .22LR autorifle <<<EXCEPTION>>> 22LR must be 40grain, solid point, copper plated, high velocity such as Remington Golden bullet, CCI mini mag, etc. 22LR conversions are finicky, but much cheaper to shoot and wicked fun. *BYO Firearms--Obviously, bring any of your own toys and ammo as well. Do not plan on buying ammo at the range. Availability is spotty at best, we do not stock a large number of calibers, and it will be expensive. Try Wal-Mart for the best price, otherwise Gander Mountain for availability. IMPORTANT NOTE: If we shoot from 8AM-Noon, we will have the ranges to ourselves and can sight in on the Rifle Range or be "under roof" on the 50Yard Range if the weather is nasty. If we start later, say 10AM, we can use the rifle range or the 50 Yard Range until Noon and then move to one of the Training/Competition Bays (T/C Bays are 30 yards deep) outside. If we start at noon or later, we will be outdoors on a T/C Bay the entire time. Whatever we do (whatever range we are on), it will need to be as a group. We cannot split up because I am the only RSO. If we pay a little extra I believe we can get the metal targets and have some real fun with those, I'd have to talk to my buddy about them again. If there are more of us that would want to go I might be able to talk him into doing it but we'd probably need to do it before they actually open on a Sunday. Preferably I'd like to wait until it warms up again to do a shooting party. I used to own a glock and loved it, easy to clean and take apart 6 pieces if I remember correctly and there's almost nothing you can do to it that will stop it from shooting. Its not the easiest shooting gun but its one of the most reliable. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Horgone on November 21, 2008, 11:47:28 PM For pistols; I have had several smith&wesson, never a bad one.

Also, we hear a lot about shootings and things that happen in America. Granted, its probably very biased and what have you, but still. I'm not saying that you guys are stupid or anything, I just don't see why people think they NEED guns. If someone could explain to me the NEED for them, I'm all ears, but if you bring up the argument that criminals can get them so why can't we protect ourselves thing then you've totally lost me. It's a load of crap. I concede on the handguns, I think they are fine, but seriously what do you do with

Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Rakrarr on November 22, 2008, 12:33:05 AM I never fired a gun until I was in the air force, and the only one they made me learn about was a 9mm beretta.
I have plenty of friends who go to the range and I've fired 5 or 6 different types now, including a M1 which was fun. I felt like I was in a video game when the clip popped out with that "ping". I don't claim to know shit about guns but I recommend a nice high powered revolver. The satisfaction I got from firing one of those little disturbing. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Nightstalker on November 22, 2008, 12:34:08 AM If someone could explain to me the NEED for them, I'm all ears, but if you bring up the argument that criminals can get them so why can't we protect ourselves thing then you've totally lost me. To defend ourselves from a tyrant government. Although that hasnt worked out so well because as long as we get our ball games, T.V. programs, and online games + porn, we'll look the other way. We'll continue to turn a blind eye to government corruption, sensationalized and politicized media. We don't care that there is a war going because so long as it's not on the news it doesnt exist. Besides we need the air time for Caley Anthony, Anna Nicole Smith, Kobe Bryant, Joe the Plumber, and discussion about Obama's dog. To recite a Roman who once said along the lines "We dont care so long as we get our bread and circus's" Well Ellanorah we are Rome, and we have our bread and circus's. What once was a noble reason to carry firearms has become, "Just cuz". I hear the Canadians carry a good arsenal too, although they are exempt from the fear mongering generated by capitalist media to spike growth in sales. As such their crime rate is no where near ours. On a personal note, I don't have any firearms and doubt I would be a person to carry one. I've been the victim of several crimes, but still have no interest in them. However I want that right preserved, in case I change my mind or becomes necessary to defend my other liberties with force. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: BobTheZombie on November 22, 2008, 12:58:09 AM Politics aside i do own guns.
I have a Walther P22 pistol, nice little thing with the extended barrel on it. I have an old remmington .222 - they were replaced by the 223, but still nice little anti-rabbit gun. 17 hmr and a 12 gauge for clay pigeon shootin. I like my walther the best cause it's just fun to shoot. It also has a nice kick to it. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Aldoran on November 23, 2008, 12:14:18 AM Here's a simple reason.
It's 3 am, your wife and kids are sleeping soundly, you've just awakened from a dream about cookie throwing aliens and have decided to hit the kitchen for some Oreos. You're on the stairs when you hear the noise, you notice a light on downstairs that shouldn't be on. You've always been anti-gun, those things kill people. Instead you pick up your cell phone and dial 911. You don't hit send because it could just be the cat, or your kids rummaging through the cabinets. Cautiously you approach the den, peeking around the corner you see a large, scary man unhooking your television. You hit send, the beep loud in the darkness. At the sound of the dispatcher you whisper for help. The large man begins walking toward the door you're hiding behind and you know that in just a few seconds you'll be seen. He's probably already heard you. What are your options? your mind whirls, you could run, but could you get away? And then what about your kids? Your wife? Could you fight him? He's got you beat by 6 inches and 80 pounds, you've not been in a fight since 9th grade. Scare him off. Tell him the police are coming, and that he better run. Criminals are scared of the cops, right? You say "HEY!" your voice loud and in charge. "What do you think you're doing? The police are on their way!" He looks at you, his crack-addled eyes blank and not at all sane. He puts down your TV, sees your hands are holding only a small blue phone, and pulls his gun. It sounds like people clapping wood together, not like the movies. Loud noise a couple times and your chest if gushing blood. The left side of your body isn't moving. Something wet slides down your cheek and you realize with some detachment that it is your right eye. Strange, there isn't much pain, not really any, it just seems so unreal. Your last thought is about your kids. The police found your kids shot to death in the hall, your wife raped and then shot in the back of the head. They caught your killer two blocks away. The police did their job, justice is served. Personally I'd rather have a gun and never need it than need a gun and not have it. That phrase gets used a lot, but it's still very true. To those who say "just outlaw all guns, if nobody has them the criminals will be powerless! Great solution, it only depends on the criminals obeying the gun laws and surrendering their weapons. A felon cannot buy a gun legally now anyway, but for some reason they still keep getting them. Imagine the fun a criminal would have in a state where no law abiding citizen has gun? You take your pistol into any house, every house, and you can steal, rape, and kill anyone you want, nobody will be armed! Criminals will be fearless. My favorite phrase is, if guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: skeanthu on November 23, 2008, 01:54:35 PM Stay with .45 ACP, easy to find ammo with enough knock-a-thug-down punch than you will need. Now here is where it gets tricky, DO NOT GO cheap on a side-arm. I have several Colts amd Kimbers. I really like the new Colt Agent, very nice conceal/carry .45. Check out Kimber's site http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/ (http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/) and Colt's http://www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/pistols.asp (http://www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/pistols.asp).
Now as for Rifles, .223-.308 are good choices. If you find a new one from a good reputable manufacturer (Rock River, Stag, DPMS, Bushmaster) for under 1k, BUY IT! I have friends in the business and the manufacturers are not even able to give them a time frame as to when more can be made...that is right, they are out of stock already. Check out Guns America http://www.gunsamerica.com/Search/Category/12/2/Guns/Rifles/AR-15-Rifles-Small-Manufacturers/Complete-Rifle.htm (http://www.gunsamerica.com/Search/Category/12/2/Guns/Rifles/AR-15-Rifles-Small-Manufacturers/Complete-Rifle.htm) to get a feel for prices. Dude! G, I didn't know you knew someone out there! I went out there a month or so ago and it's great! Brand new facility and it's pretty close. I'm kicking myself for not getting an M4 earlier this year... There is no need to owning a high powered rifle or hand gun. There is also no need to play computer games, no need to post on this forum, and no need for 99% of the things we all do in our daily lives. It is however our right to purchase and own guns. I think its an interesting and enjoyable hobby.
The old cliche fits, guns do not kill people, people do. They tried the assault weapon ban here in the states and it pretty much didn't do anything. That said... Bob - I was looking at the Walther models more out of sheer curiousity and because of the hype from bond movies Gar -WTF gr0n and I were going to go shoot there just because its so damn close to Hilliard Ske - I was looking at the .40 caliber, just because it had more power than the 9mm but cheaper ammo than the .45, or am i wrong on that? Jester - I've looked at glocks but haven't fired 'em, for some reason glock has some negative image in my head, not sure why Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Reddawn on November 24, 2008, 04:20:32 PM I want a barrett 50cal

Jester - I've looked at glocks but haven't fired 'em, for some reason glock has some negative image in my head, not sure why I've talked to a number of cops and such that absolutely love their Glocks, they are not the easiest guns to shoot less accurate than the higher priced pistols out there but you can freeze them, drop them in the mud and literally abuse the shit out of them and they will always forgive you and fire every time. My buddy that works at the range has one with a couple hundred thousand rounds through it and has never had an issue. He used to shoot competitively and would use sub machine gun grade 9mm ammo because the Glock could take it and wouldn't complain. Not to say the Glock is the gun for you but I'd definitely not rule it out without first shooting it. My pops has the 40mm version and if you want to flip for the ammo I'm pretty sure I could convince him to let me borrow it for a day of shooting. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Unnormal on November 24, 2008, 07:49:58 PM 3,000-5,000 based on model and accessories. Last time they were throwing in a thousand rounds of 50 cal ammo. which that in itself is worth at minimum a grand. Probably in anticipation of them being banned and there stock being worthless.

Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: Redbear8 on November 26, 2008, 03:11:39 PM I don't know if any of you saw it, but a couple years back Discovery did a show on what the world would be like in a couple thousands of years. They came to the conclusion that squid would actually be the smartest creatures on earth and would be dominating it even on land.
True Story. Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: thrun on November 26, 2008, 03:38:42 PM Ya I saw that. It's part of why we need to make sure we get them first. Cephalopods are not to be trusted. Bastards is smart.

Here's what you need in a squid fight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queequeg Title: Re: Hand Guns - who has them, opinions, suggestions, pics Post by: skeanthu on November 26, 2008, 06:36:32 PM Ske - I was looking at the .40 caliber, just because it had more power than the 9mm but cheaper ammo than the .45, or am i wrong on that? .40 is easy to find, a lot of smaller police depts. use it. For me still a .45 is the best. I love the 1911, and so many modern side-arms are modeled after it that the original cannot be beat. |
