Title: Holier than WoW?
Post by: Nightstalker on March 28, 2008, 09:29:03 PM
Salute!

Just figure I would give a heads up as to what one does when no longer playing World of Warcraft.

For about 6 months now i've been playing a game called Mount and Blade, which was first developed by a Turkish couple some 2-3 years ago. Mount and Blade just recently got picked up by Paradox, and is scheduled for its 1.0 release shortly. The game itself is what I consider to be the model template of all successful RPG games to come: Action/Strategy/RPG. Think Dynasty Warriors, meets Romance of the Three Kingdoms, meets Rome: Total War. Heres some screens of the vanilla engine... http://www.taleworlds.com/mb_ss.html

The gameplay itself is damn fun. Equip your character in any fashion you see fit; knight armor, ranged weapons, etc. Gain levels and assign attribute points and skill points, just as you would a normal RPG. Recruit soldiers for your army, and hire hero types you can level up in the manner in which your character levels. Capture castles, towns etc and develope them.

The source for the game is also publicized, which allows for heavy modifications to the base game. To that effect, I have become a mod director of a variant named "Legions Extended", that is staged around 272 B.C., and has to deal with the Roman Republic and many factions throughout the Mediterranean including the successor kingdoms. I've modded the map and made models for the overhead map icons such as towns castles etc. Without advertisement, the mod is fairly successful with over 1700 downloads for it;s beta in 6 days. Now that the community is aware of it, im anticipating those numbers to swell with the next release  ;D .My forum can be found here (exclusivly for Kull and Sweet posts).. http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/board,98.0.html

In addition to Legions Extended, there have been several successful mods released such as the Lord of the Rings mod "The Last Days", samurai mod "Onin no Ran" just to name a few. The game modability, is extremely flexible, and as such someone is working on a Battlestar Galactica mod. Good stuff.

You can download the trial of the game(you download the full game), which will allow you to gain level 8 before ending, at which point you can decide if you want to purchase the CD key.

Definitely something worth checking out on patch day, or to take a break from grinding WoW.

KULL.

If it was "Mount" a Motorcycle or car and Weild your Switch "Blade" or chainsaw or something like that I would be down, but I just can't do another sword swinger right now.

Yeah, learning to play with mounted combat gets addictive.
which mod(s) have you tried, or are you still on vanilla?

The base game itself has a little work left to go, such as with additional quests, and long term goals but those can be defined by the modders working on custom mods. its easy to see the genre has dynamite potential as well.

I'm actually in contact with the composer who wrote songs for Europa Barbarorum, and it looks like hes going to do some custom music for my mod. It's going to be sweet

Ok I downloaded it.

I hate you Night.

Looks interesting.

....is there any kind of coop play?  Or is it a stand alone type thing.

Right now its stand alone.

Hopefully Paradox will ride them about releasing a multiplayer variant. I'm not sure if they have it planned originally, but It would be nice :)

Ok, been playing for a bit.  The official Stu Revu:  I'm a tad bit addicted.  Started a few guys, but was kinda bored with them.  I think because the kingdom I decided to ally myself with on one wasn't at war.  Now I'm allied with the Nords, have a feif, and we are at war with 3 different kingdoms.  Kinda rocks.

Up to 63 in my party and we regularly own 2x that much.

I just kept on recruiting, doing quests for the other lords in my kingdom, rescuing people from bandits etc.  And putting points into leadership.  Also, I have 3 companions that I am going to put points into leadership, first aid, engineering, trading, persuasion etc.  Which helps.

I tried seigeing (sp) my 1st town yesterday, and had to run hehe.

OK, ignore my earlier snark.  This is an addictive game.  It needs some polish, better graphics maybe, definitely better hit detection, but other than that it's pretty damn good.  Thanks for pointing this out Night.

Welcome aboard.

M&B is a very good genre fusion. Its the way to go as far as strategy goes imo.

when M&B 1.0 is released, they are supposed to jump right into 2.0 after that which will include multiplayer. THAT will make things interesting.

Hopefully i'll have my mod polished before then. Alot of good things coming to it. Soon i'll have a preview up of the custom music from Nick Wylie.. top notch stuff.

Yeah, defenitly addictive.  Not to mention when you take over a castle, they sure seem to start gunning for you.  Can you say 190 vs 65?  hehe.  Fun though.

Hey whats up.  I'll have to check this out this weekend (I am at work right now), but I'm definately down to see whats going on with this game and your mod.

I'll scope out the source, too.  Be interested to get that "under the hood" look as well.

I had your mod installed, but I was just running the tutorial, which looked like it might have been using the vanilla mod.

Yeah, thats native build that cant be removed.

FYI my mod is known for having the longest load time of all the mods. Its so epic :)
theres alot to be done yet to cut down load times. My plate is full of work to do :/

Oh lordy, it took like 2-3 mins for the tutorial to load, is your mod longer? hehe Any tips on getting it to run smoother? I dont have a dedicated video card, but ive got 2gb of ram, and at least 256 of that set to video. I turned down pretty much everything. I did see something about copy protection on their forums, so maybe a vista issue?

It takes forever for it to load on my rig as well.  I actually stopped your mod from working because I thought it had stalled.

Maybe I'll give it a try again this weekend, I can start it and then go change my oil.  :P

Er yeah, went for a more professional appeal. Reworked all the interface screens to set the theme to the era.

I lost a couple features in the process of porting over to the new version of the game. The custom banners wont be back in game for a while, and all the horses got new animations so I had to use the native placeholders till we get reworks to the animations for our horses / elephants. Also the color conversion of the sleeveless armors is a little more true from the BRF tool, and since the new BRF tool doesnt have a coloring option yet the ethnic armor models are a little darker than they should be.

ATM i'm working on essentially doubling the faction list in the mod, so the politics should be rather interesting..

Also soon i'll be entering the second phase of the mod which will be inclusive of new scenes. Construction on the wonders of the world has already started..
