my question always was:

if only 55 out of 100 people can read that, then why does it say the human mind (which most all people have AFAIK) can read it? Isn't that contradictory?

I've seen things like this before and they say everyone can read it.  I've also seen others that have said as long as the first and last letter of the word are correct then the other letters do not matter and that the mind can form the words by itself.

False.  Don't believe me?  Spend 30 seconds in any Wal-Mart.  Doesn't matter which one.  You can go the one in Beverly Hills if you like.  It's like a bug zapper for mouth-breathers.

I think one of the great disadvantages of American schools is that we abandon spelling and vocabulary lessons in Middle School, yet we test for these things later on the SAT. I think spelling should be a core component of lessons along with vocabulary as it enhances understanding and mastery over spoken and written language. While I do not think we should expect students to be perfect at this, I think - even in a digital age - we should stress the importance of self growth. This will not make us better spellers. But it will make us better readers and more self aware of our mistakes.
